lumia1Nokia Australia today popped up their antipodean translation of the Lumia 800 advertisement, it’s a thirty second commercial, overview, and I’m hoping it starts airing on local TV tomorrow. It feels like we are the last in line for the Lumias, so I hope they have plenty of stock coming. Nokia has been sliding support videos onto their channel rather surreptitiously, no fanfare, no bells and whistles, unless you were digging you would not find this stuff at all.

With the phone set to be available on all Networks next week, and a few retailers flogging it as well, it’s time it hit the news. I did a bit of a poll today at work, and was surprised to get less than twenty per cent recognition on the device. Expect some big marketing in the next week, and hopefully an event to go with it.

Check all the videos over at Nokia Australia You Tube.

nokia-squaresThe Nokia Lumia juggernaut just keeps rolling out, and whether the events are big or small, the concerted world wide effort has to be having an impact outside of techie circles. With a catchy tune, and the now familiar coloured checkerboard, reminiscent of the Metro UI tiles, Nokia have effectively rebranded themselves in the space of five months.

Reports say the Lumia 800 is selling like wildfire, and stats like mobile browsers results, and many developers server results have the phone showing up in greater numbers. In the application I’m a WP7, the Lumia 800 has gone from zero up to 7% of devices worldwide.

With that number only looking to rise further, would Nokia’s campaign be deemed successful yet? Check Videos from Ireland and Spain after the jump

logo-yes-optusAnother in the line of lead ups, and Nokia Lumia pre sales coming up locally, today Optus has both the Australia destined Lumias up for pre order. Pre order before the 26th of February and

Pre-order by 26 February 2012^^ and we will deliver your phone on 1 March 2012. While stocks last. Pre-order is exclusive to online customers only.

Which also gives us a definite date for availability of the phones in store as well. Optus stores that are not franchises at least.

Both phones have no dollar up front options, with the 710 starting on $29 a month, with 200 Mb data included, and the 800 starts at $49 a month with 1.5 Gb data. They are both two year plans, and the $49 seems to be the best value. Order after the 26th, and delivery will be after the first of March, how long after is the question. You can pre order the Lumia 710 Here, and the Lumia 800 Here.

At the moment there is nothing on the site about an outright price, but the general rumour has been about $699, either way if you want one of these puppies, get online now.

Lumia800_promo-640x360Two weeks ago Nokia confirmed via a Press Release, that the Lumia 800 would be hitting the continent come March. While there has already been a Sydney launch, as covered by Gizmodo AU, there’s still a lot of launching to be done. There’s a press event this week in Melbourne, which is another of the lead ups to launch, and hopefully I can get a bit of hands on time with the device.

As the launch becomes closer, Nokia have ramped up news about the device, just a little in the media, and Nokia Australia has some introductory video on their YouTube channel.

Plus the featured video above, while Nokia seem to be keeping it pretty laid back and Aussie, I’m pretty sure they want people to pick up on this in a big way.  Also notable is a series of videos on the Lumia 710, which is said to be coming later in the year, rounding out Lumia in Australia.

As for the Lumia 900, that will just be waited for with baited breath, although we might get some news on it later in the week, but I doubt it.

square_logo_lightBlueThe name Charlie Kindel is synonymous with Windows Phone.  Up until September last year, Charlie was GM of Windows Phone Dev, and lead evangelist for app development. While he’s mainly questioned about Android in this video, he makes some enlightening statements. A blanket statement is" “that all Mobile Os’s are fundamentality the same technology stack”.

Let the Video speak for itself, there’s some great food for thought in there.

lumia610xWe’ve been hearing a lot about Tango and the fact that it will be able to run budget devices, with less RAM. It’s even been suggested that the update may not be delivered to existing phones as it’s focused on a really specific purpose. Leaked images of one device the Lumia 610, appeared earlier in the week as well, whether they are real is suspect.

People seem to be forgetting that it’s always been billed as an update, so it’s good to see some features leaking that confirm that. A user over at a Russian forum has shared screenshots of the updated OS. They are also reporting build numbers running up to 7.10.8762, with an LG device featuring in the stats as well. We know Tango is coming and what’s important is what’s new in the build.

nokia-squares

Most people thought the Lumia 710 was the poor second cousin that would inhabit the pockets, saris and loin cloths of the third world, bringing Windows Phone to a demographic that may still be closer to the barter system, than the banking system.

Still in a leak today, prior to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, it looks like a real Tango handset is about to come from Nokia, so 256 Mb memory, 4 or 8 Gb internal storage, and a price point that should be about half of the Lumia 710. Tech Radar got the exclusive on the leak today, and say the phone will most likely only be offered pre paid.

No real details on the phone, although following what the Tango version of Windows Phone will be like,

The new OS is heavily rumoured bring support for lower end hardware (such as fewer pixels, slower processors and perhaps no dedicated camera shutter) and fits perfectly with a cheap-as-chips handset appearing on the market.

That’s all speculation for now, as another Nokia rumour from IntoMobile suggests that the Finnish company is going off shore, moving it’s manufacturing, and changing to a new chipset to keep costs down overall.

According to DigiTimes, who has a mixed track record, but have proved themselves reliable numerous times in the past, Nokia is considering going with either MediaTek or MStar Semiconductor for future low end devices

Even to the point of sourcing new chipsets for their devices, Nokia are going all out to cut costs, though I think there will be a catch, and this strategy may only apply to the 610, a lot of people would be put off by the fact that they had never heard of the chipset manufacturer before. All of these details had been discounted because they came from the now not so reliable Eldar Murtazin, editor in chief of Mobile Review in Russia.

It’s all a bit vague, but it’s probably Nokia’s strategy for Asia, and the need to supply bulk devices for a lesser cost to both the consumer and the company. When you think about the size of the population in south east Asia alone, Nokia may be looking at the end of the rainbow.

reinstallerReinstaller for Windows Phone is exactly what it says it is, say you’ve had to reset the phone, on the go. Need your favourite Twitter app, analytics for your blog, or the best news reader. Apps you use every day and can’t get to a PC to download again quickly. Of course for a couple of apps you could search the marketplace from the phone and reinstall one by one Which is as tedious as doing via the PC. It’s a simple app that does one thing, once installed on the phone, you can log into Windowsphone.com, and automatically reinstall all of your apps that you have ever purchased.

How does it work? When you tap on the Connect button, Reinstaller prompts you to login to https://www.windowsphone.com and then scans the website for all the apps that you have ever installed on your Windows Phone. Once you are done with that, you can tap on the on the Install button on the main page. The install page displays list of all the apps that are associated with your Live account. Using the jump list and check boxes you can install all or some of them

It’s a simple app that really needs no explanation to use, and if you need a bit of help, there are prompts within the app.
