Today the last of the big three Australian phone carriers, confirmed that they had approved the Tango [MCR3] update for the Lumia 710 and 800. Of course Optus are also carrying the Lumia 900 which shipped with Tango on board. The confirmation comes from one of the moderators over at the Optus Community forum.

We’ve approved the MCR3 OS update for the Nokia Lumia 710 & 800 handsets. Lumia 900 came with MCR3, however there will be an OEM update available by the end of this month.

No mention of other devices, like the Samsung Omnia 7, that Optus carried at the launch of WP. The other thing to mention is that there is no confirmed rollout schedule, although it is inferred

The current process for the update to be made available is a rolling release. After we approve the update its sent on to Microsoft to be made available through their servers. During the first stage of the rollout the update is only made available to a small number of users worldwide and further users are added as the rollout progresses through each stage.
The first stage for the 710, 800 handsets began late June and we’re hoping all users should see the update before the end of this month

The described update process is of course nothing new, and seems to be indicative of what is happening in all corners of the globe at the moment, prompting people to try all sorts of methods to force the update early. Of course don’t expect this to mean you’ll get the update any quicker.

Force_tango_zune_8112So there’s a hard way to force the Tango [MCR3] update onto your phone. You have to get the resources together, and there’s no guarantee that you won’t brick your phone in the process. There is though, an even simpler method that goes back to the NoDo update.

Vodafone Aus has been really good about keeping it’s users up to date with where their devices stand in regards to updates. Setting up their updates page in response to users in the lead up to the Nodo update, back in  march 2011, and evolved into a weekly update on their company blog. Not only covering Windows phone updates, but updates for their various Android, Blackberry, and Symbian smartphones.

Vodafone was ahead of the game when it came to keeping customers informed, and in fact testing and releasing Windows Phone updates, and it seems they have gazumped the other Australian networks again. In their weekly software update, posted today, looks like they have started testing the WP Update, MCR3 for the HTC Trophy and the Nokia Lumia 800.

MCR3, Mango Consumer Refresh 3, is the official name for what most WP users know as the Tango update. It’s not a huge update as far as I know, it updates the OS from 7.10.8107 to 7.10. 8773.98, and there are not a lot of really noticeable features that I’ve been able to find on my Titan 4G.

The update was expected for unlocked phones some time in the first two weeks of June, and Vodafone’s disclosure of testing fits well with the rumoured schedule. The updates will be a welcome diversion for most users who haven’t seen an update since January this year. Again the promise of disclosure and keeping users appraised of the update situation pays off, kudos to vodafone!

With Nokia definitely bringing more of it’s devices to Australia, namely the Lumia 900 and 610, news of updates, specifically Tango, [consumer refresh three, build 8773] becoming available is leaking out. WPCentral got their hands on a build for the Lumia 710, using this software, and the features include a few things that have been sorely missed from the OS. Call forwarding, picture and video mms, voice note mms, call waiting, internet sharing and more. A lot of these features will probably be dependent on carriers and phone plans of course, but plug some of the big gaps in the OS, that have been available to iOS and Android users for a while.

In what seems like an isolated case, one user has reported getting updates on an unlocked HTC Mozart, comprising three updates, all the way up to OS Version 7.10.8779.8. Aviraj Ajgekar, a Microsoft employee and tech evangelist reported on his blog on the fourth of May, that his Mozart received the update in a series of three updates.

The first update I received was 7.10.8112.7. It was a small update took few seconds to download. One new enhancement is that instead of forcing the phone data backup it given me an option to apply the update without taking backup (a checkbox provided) which was brilliant as it saved lot of time.

The ability to bypass backing up the phone would really speed up the process, although I’m sure a lot of people would like to keep the option to roll back. Aviraj’s description of the update indicates that the downloads were not huge, and that no obvious changes were evident afterwards.

At this point I could not find any new feature as such except minor performance improvement while launching applications.

What is strange, is that no other users, have reported receiving the update, and I can confirm that my own Mozart is languishing on 7.10.8107, after trying multiple times to update. Why one phone updated, when many others haven’t, the only clue, or reasonable explanation I could find, comes from the comments over at Neowin,

He probably has a phone that has a serial number that’s been flagged for beta updates by mistake.

What ever the anomaly, it bodes well for WP users with unlocked devices, and the timing fits with carrier branded phones, likely to get the update in June. Reporting this as the floodgates opening though, is misleading at this point, but it might prompt MS to start pushing the update out sooner that they were planning on.

lumia610xWe’ve been hearing a lot about Tango and the fact that it will be able to run budget devices, with less RAM. It’s even been suggested that the update may not be delivered to existing phones as it’s focused on a really specific purpose. Leaked images of one device the Lumia 610, appeared earlier in the week as well, whether they are real is suspect.

People seem to be forgetting that it’s always been billed as an update, so it’s good to see some features leaking that confirm that. A user over at a Russian forum has shared screenshots of the updated OS. They are also reporting build numbers running up to 7.10.8762, with an LG device featuring in the stats as well. We know Tango is coming and what’s important is what’s new in the build.
